The safest road to Self Destruction is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.

It’s hard to admit how easily and subtly we fall into an improper state of mind.  Little by little, day by day, month by month, year by year.  Our minds begin filling up with fears, anxieties, tensions, resentments, guilt or a combination of several of these emotions.

When we deal with these emotional handicaps for prolonged periods of time, the weight we carry starts accumulating.  Sooner or later our personal stability begins to crumble.  This starts turning our lives into complicated situations to solve due to the fears, guilts and resentments we may be holding onto.

If we were to add hate, grudges, jealousy, ill-will, the results would start manifesting physically through our bodies.  We would experience a chemical reaction in the body set off by emotional outbursts that result in feelings of ill-health.  If this were to continue over a long period of time, the general condition of the body would deteriorate.  These emotions don’t hurt anybody else but yourself.

These emotions do not produce harm on the person to which you hold the feelings for.  But everyday and every night of your life, they are eating away at you.  Emotional illnesses will almost always turn back upon yourself, zapping your energy, reducing your efficiency, causing deterioration of your health and of course, they siphon off your happiness.

We may then realize that our life is being governed and directed by all these emotional handicaps.  What started as a pleasure became a need.  What was once a bad mood became a continuous self indictment.  What was once an annoyance became persecution.  The process of being governed by these symptoms grows stronger as time continues to go on.  It becomes increasingly difficult to resist the pull.

In order to keep up with how we are being governed by the guilt, anxiety and fear, we create a defense mechanism to be able to cope.  We begin creating a very complicated maze of lies where we are constantly living in fear of being exposed as well as the fear of being considered a fraud and a powerful sense of shame.  We then find no other solution but to be quiet and restrained.  We secretly start living in a very dark world; while becoming prisoners of not wanting to be seen for who we truly are.  Do not let yourself be eaten away by all of this!  Find your way out of the maze!

How Can We Break Free From These Behavioral Patterns?

We are all able to select where we are going to direct our focus.  When we place our sight on something, we are capable of blocking out everything else in our surroundings in order to be able to focus on what we want to see and also listen to.

Have you ever come to think about why we don’t use this same principle on the things we want to focus our thoughts in?  We have the tendency of letting our minds roam free without any sort of control.  The problem is that for the most part, the mind will gear towards the negative thoughts that do not contribute to our well-being.
